A Fresh Refurbishment for Burnett Lane in Brisbane CBD
The laneway in Burnett Lane is set for a new façade and a new 50 square metre hospitality tenancy as part of the refurbishment for the podium level of 89 Adelaide St, reports Brisbanedevelopment.com.
As part of the development, Coles supermarkets will occupy level 1 with Queensland’s first ‘Coles Local’ supermarket; the boutique arm of retail food giant. The concept is up and running in Surry Hills in NSW and contains a barista station, has a resident chef providing samples and advice to customers, and sells 100% Australian-grown fresh fruit, vegetables, meat and fresh seafood.

Building Bridges Towards a New World City
Brisbane is on the way to an incredible transformation, with incoming Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner committing to five new ‘green’ bridges to be built in the city over the next ten years, reports brisbanetimes.com.au.
At a total of $550 million, the main aim of the new pedestrian bridges will help reduce congestion in the city. The Brisbane City Council has indicated they will provide two-thirds of the capital, and will seek the balance via state and federal government funding.
Cr Schrinner said council was committed to the project regardless on the pending March 2020 election, and the bridges will help the city become a more active, green and clean.
"They will provide more opportunity to get across the river, they will take traffic of the road, and they will provide more time for people to spend with family and friends," Cr Schrinner told the publication.
The proposed bridge locations include:
- Kangaroo Point to CBD
- Two West End bridges, one from Toowong to West End and the other from St Lucia to West End
- Kingsford Smith Drive Riverwalk into the existing riverwalk network will be constructed at Breakfast Creek
- Belbowrie to Wacol
The Kangaroo Point to CBD cycle and pedestrian bridge is the first to progress, current at the business case stage. The community has until tomorrow (Friday 6 December) to have their say on the bridges via an online survey on the council website.
Hannah Schuhmann welcomes the announcement as any infrastructure that reduces traffic makes the CBD more appealing for residents, workers and tourists. A timely commitment, as the Australian Bureau of Statistics predicts Brisbane will be home to 51% of all residents living in Queensland in 2027.
Clean, Green, Near-Silent Machines!
The Brisbane Metro is a project worth getting excited about!
The latest announcement is that the fleet will be fully electric, clean, and green battery-powered with the tender awarded to Brisbane-based supplier Volgren and electric vehicle producer HESS, who will deliver 60 vehicles for the project, reports brisbanedevelopment.com.au.
Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said the city will be thrust onto the world stage for leading the way in modern public transit methods.
“I think the people of Brisbane will be very excited about these vehicles, and proud that their city is taking a positive step to cut vehicle pollution – saving an estimated 50,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions over 20 years, not to mention the cost savings on fuel,” Cr Schrinner said.
Charging of the vehicles will take just six minutes at the end of each route and will have no tailpipe emissions.
Each vehicle can carry 150 passengers (or 180 in event mode), will be 24.4 metres long and 2.55 metres wide. Each will have three carriages, four large double doors, low floor front, be fitted with USB ports, have free wifi, and panoramic rear window. The service will run along dedicated busways and operate 24-hours on the weekend.
Stage one of the project will be 21 kilometres long which will connect 18 stations between Eight Mile Plains and Roma Street, and Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital and University of Queensland
The first vehicle will be made in 2020 as a pilot for trials and testing. The fit-out and finishing of the vehicles will be done a Volgren’s Eagle Farm Facility, creating around 40 jobs.

Every World City Needs A Metro! Brisbane Metro Works Starting January 2020
The State Government and Brisbane City Council have settled months of negotiations around the re-positioning of the Cultural Centre station and given the green light for the $944 million Brisbane Metro project to proceed, report brisbanedevelopment.com.
Preliminary works will begin around the Cultural Centre in January 2020 after the parties agreed on a compromise. The government initially wanted to see the Cultural Centre station positioned under the Convention Centre and more green space around the station. The proposal to move the station underground has agreed to be scraped due to logistical challenges with passenger movements from the above-ground bus station.
As a compromise, council will now be investigating a tunnel that would take West End to CBD bus routes and bypass the intersection of Melbourne and Grey Streets. This proposed tunnel would allow for a new public square at QPAC, keeping in line with the government’s request for more green space.
Brisbane City Council Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner never doubted the project would go ahead, it was a matter of when, not if.
“The project will be delivering a new tunnel under Adelaide Street to link North Quay to the King George Square Bus Station.
“We need to plan a desirable entry point into the heart of the city ahead of the high-frequency Brisbane Metro, which is expected to increase passenger numbers to King George Square by 120 per cent,” Cr Schrinner said.
The next step for the project will be the announcement of the contract for the metro vehicles which is expected in the coming weeks.
Hannah Schuhmann said Brisbane is on the cusp of an incredible transformation, and the CBD is the place to be!CoreLogic-Moody’s Analytics predicting a 5.6% increase in CBD apartment values in 2020, followed by a further 5.8% rise in 2021.
