Clean, Green, Near-Silent Machines!

The Brisbane Metro is a project worth getting excited about!

The latest announcement is that the fleet will be fully electric, clean, and green battery-powered with the tender awarded to Brisbane-based supplier Volgren and electric vehicle producer HESS, who will deliver 60 vehicles for the project,  reports

Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said the city will be thrust onto the world stage for leading the way in modern public transit methods.

“I think the people of Brisbane will be very excited about these vehicles, and proud that their city is taking a positive step to cut vehicle pollution – saving an estimated 50,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions over 20 years, not to mention the cost savings on fuel,” Cr Schrinner said.

Charging of the vehicles will take just six minutes at the end of each route and will have no tailpipe emissions.

Each vehicle can carry 150 passengers (or 180 in event mode), will be 24.4 metres long and 2.55 metres wide. Each will have three carriages, four large double doors, low floor front, be fitted with USB ports, have free wifi, and panoramic rear window. The service will run along dedicated busways and operate 24-hours on the weekend.

Stage one of the project will be 21 kilometres long which will connect 18 stations between Eight Mile Plains and Roma Street, and Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital and University of Queensland

The first vehicle will be made in 2020 as a pilot for trials and testing. The fit-out and finishing of the vehicles will be done a Volgren’s Eagle Farm Facility, creating around 40 jobs.
